Revision Knee & Hip Replacement Surgeon in Hyderabad

Revision Surgery In Hyderabad

Revision knee replacement surgery is performed when a previously implanted knee replacement fails, becomes loose, or wears out over time. It is a more complex procedure compared to the initial knee replacement as it involves removing the old prosthesis and replacing it with a new one. The surgery is crucial for restoring knee function and relieving pain when the initial knee replacement no longer works effectively. Dr. Adarsh Annapareddy, a renowned revision knee replacement surgeon in Hyderabad, offers expert care in revision knee surgery, aiming to restore knee function and relieve pain when the initial procedure no longer provides effective results.

Revision knee replacement surgery

Who Needs Revision Knee Replacement Surgery?

Patients may need revision surgery if they experience:

  • Implant wear or loosening over time, causing pain and instability
  • Infection in the knee joint that requires removing and replacing the prosthesis
  • Fracture around the knee prosthesis due to an injury
  • Instability or stiffness that restricts normal knee movement

If you are experiencing persistent pain, swelling, or difficulty moving your knee after a previous knee replacement, revision surgery may be the right option for you.

Why is Revision Surgery Necessary?

Over time, knee implants can wear out or fail due to various reasons such as high-impact activities, excess weight, or normal wear and tear. Revision surgery is necessary to:

  • Restore function: Replace a worn-out or damaged implant with a new prosthesis.
  • Relieve pain: Alleviate the discomfort caused by the failed implant.
  • Correct alignment: Ensure the knee joint is properly aligned to function normally.

How is Revision Knee Surgery Performed?

During the procedure, the surgeon will:

  • Remove the old prosthesis and any damaged bone or tissue.
  • Prepare the remaining bone for the new implant.
  • Insert a new prosthesis, which may be specially designed to accommodate any bone loss or deformity caused by the previous surgery.

Outcomes of Revision Knee Replacement Surgery

Revision knee surgery can successfully restore knee function and significantly improve mobility and quality of life. However, recovery may take longer than the initial knee replacement surgery due to the complexity of the procedure. Physical therapy is a crucial part of rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility.

Knee replacement

Bottom Line

Revision knee replacement is a specialised procedure designed to correct failed knee replacements. It helps patients regain knee function, reduce pain, and return to daily activities, but the recovery may be more challenging than the first surgery. Following your surgeon’s advice and rehabilitation program is essential for optimal outcomes.

Revision Hip Replacement Surgery – What You Need to Know

Revision hip replacement surgery is necessary when a previously performed hip replacement fails or wears out over time. It involves removing the old hip prosthesis and replacing it with a new implant. This surgery is more complex than the initial hip replacement and requires careful planning to restore mobility and relieve pain. As a highly experienced revision hip replacement surgeon in Hyderabad, Dr. Adarsh Annapareddy customizes each procedure to restore mobility, alleviate pain, and improve the patient’s quality of life.

Hip replacement surgery

Who Needs Revision Hip Replacement Surgery?

Revision hip replacement may be necessary if:

  • The implant has worn out or loosened, causing instability or pain.
  • Infection has developed around the prosthesis.
  • Fractures have occurred around the hip joint or implant.
  • Dislocation or instability of the hip joint is causing pain and limited mobility.

Patients who experience ongoing hip pain, stiffness, or difficulty walking after a previous hip replacement should consult their orthopaedic surgeon about the possibility of revision surgery.

Why is Revision Surgery Necessary?

Hip implants, like knee implants, can wear out over time due to various factors like age, activity levels, or weight. Revision hip replacement is performed to:

  • Relieve pain: Address discomfort caused by a failed or worn-out implant.
  • Restore function: Improve hip mobility and stability by replacing the old prosthesis.
  • Correct complications: Address any fractures, infections, or implant loosening.

How is Revision Hip Surgery Performed?

During revision surgery, the surgeon will:

  • Remove the old hip implant and any damaged bone or tissue.
  • Prepare the hip joint for the new prosthesis.
  • Insert a new, often larger or more specialised prosthesis, which may be necessary due to bone loss or changes in the hip structure.

Outcomes of Revision Hip Replacement Surgery

While revision hip surgery is more complex, it can effectively relieve pain and improve joint function. However, recovery may take longer than the initial hip replacement. Patients will typically need an extended period of physical therapy and follow-up care to regain strength and mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Primary replacement surgery is the first-time replacement of a joint with a prosthetic implant, while revision surgery involves replacing a previously implanted prosthesis that has failed or worn out over time.
You may need revision surgery if you experience persistent pain, instability, swelling, or difficulty moving your joint after your initial knee or hip replacement. Other signs include joint infection, dislocation, or a noticeable decrease in the functionality of the implant.
Common reasons include implant wear, loosening, infection, fractures around the joint, and instability. In some cases, high-impact activities or excess weight can cause the implant to wear out prematurely.
Recovery from revision surgery can take longer than the initial replacement, typically several months. Physical therapy is crucial for regaining strength and mobility. Your recovery timeline will depend on the complexity of your surgery and your overall health.
Yes, revision surgeries are more complex and carry higher risks than primary replacements. These include an increased chance of infection, blood clots, and complications related to bone loss or tissue damage. However, your surgeon will take steps to minimise these risks.
While revision implants are designed to be durable, their longevity can vary depending on factors like your activity level, weight, and overall health. On average, a revised knee or hip replacement can last 10-15 years or longer with proper care.
Both procedures involve replacing a failed implant, but revision knee replacement is more focused on correcting alignment issues and improving knee stability. Revision hip replacement often addresses dislocation or fractures around the hip joint. The complexity of each surgery varies based on the joint involved and the specific problem.
Yes, most patients can return to normal activities after revision surgery, though recovery may take longer. Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and cycling are generally encouraged, but high-impact sports should be avoided to prevent future complications.
During the procedure, Dr. Adarsh Annapareddy will carefully remove the old prosthesis, address any damaged bone or tissue, and prepare the joint for the new implant. The surgery may involve a customized prosthesis to account for bone loss or deformities caused by the previous surgery.

My mother recently had both her knee surgery done by Dr. Adarsh, a warm and empathetic doctor who won over our confidence immediately with his warm smile and affable nature. We had a lot of doubts and were actually quite scared about the whole procedure, but the way he explained everything to us and guided us at every step of the journey with patience and understanding, was truly amazing! It was an absolutely seamless experience at KIMS Sunshine Hospital, Gachibowli where the staff and entire team were very helpful. Dr. Adarsh's assistant Santosh was very cooperative as well, going out of his way to direct us to the right department for not only treatment purposes but also our insurance requirements. A big thank you to Dr. Adarsh and his entire team for giving wings to my Mom's travel dreams by giving a fresh lease of life to her both knees! 🙏 We just came back from Kerala and are planning our next trip already! ✈️
